Darul Umoor should Blend Al-Azhar and Oxford University

  • Bangalore based builder Ziaulla Sheriff, chairman of the Sheriff Foundation, has now taken upon himself to fulfil the martyred warrior’s vision of raising a university where the younger generation could be imparted skills from the emerging areas. Sheriff’s philanthropy has already put in place a number of socially beneficial institutions in the towns and cities of Southern Karnataka.
  • Personalities are the wellsprings of inspiration. And all those who have heard or studied about Tipu Sultan find in him a lovable person, a gallant warrior, a statesman, a benevolent ruler and a pious servant of God. His personality remains a source of inspiration.

Excerpts from the interview with Mr. Ziaulla Sheriff.

Q: How did the idea of Darul Umoor take birth?
A: I bore deep love with the martyred hero of Mysore since my childhood. His piety, justice, his farsighted economic policies, and his commitment towards the welfare of his people had made him my ideal. I always wanted to know what was his vision, what direction he followed. I had vowed to do something to fulfil his vision if Allah ever bestowed on me his special blessings

It was this vision that was behind the establishment of the “Bach chon ka Ghar” in Hassan. It has now 200 child inmates, a mosque, residential school, musafir khana, scholarship fund, clinic, loans schemes for entrepreneurs and assistance for marriages of poor.

Q: But Darul Umoor sets a new trend in blending the two streams of education.
A: Late Maulana Ali Miyan encouraged me to set up Darul Umoor where Al-Azhar and Oxford Universities could meet. He laid the foundation stone at Srirangapatna and prayed for its success. I want this centre to gather talents and create facilities for young minds to nourish at the fountains of the traditional and the modern sciences.

Q: You have been in community service for well over two decades. How do you look at it?
A: I do not expect anything from the community. You will be frustrated if you expect anything from them. You should rather be a contributor to the society. Purify your niyyah (intention) and be a contributor. Allah will shower his bounties on you.

Q: Philanthropy has followed a set path so far of madrassas, masjid and yateemkhana. Are you seeking a deviation by Darul Umoor?
A: Our history has produced great people who made tremendous sacrifices. They fed others while themselves remaining hungry. What the life has taught me is that what Allah has destined to give you will not be snatched by anyone. We should develop need-based institutions.

Q: Several Islamic Investment companies have failed in recent years. You, as a successful businessman, have any suggestion for the youth who are looking for leadership in the field of business?
A: These Islamic investment companies were run by people who were not finance experts. They should have sought consultation from business experts of integrity. Our youth beg for jobs. Instead, they should set up ventures and think big. They should have capacity to take risk, develop trust with people and keep their word. Integrity, punctuality, transparency etc. are hallmarks of success in business.
